3 Signs It Is Time To Reseal Your Granite Countertops

Do you have granite counters in your home that are overdue for professional maintenance? Do you know how to tell if your seal has worn down? In this article we will discuss the 3 signs it is time to reseal your granite countertops. How Long Has It Been? In general, you will want to have all of your natural stone surfaces resealed every 12-24 months. The more you interact with the sealed surface, the more frequently the surface will require a fresh coat of sealant. Normal wear and tear will not damage your stone surfaces if they are properly sealed. When the seal begins to fade, damage can easily occur. Cloudiness and Etch Marks Have you noticed your natural stone surfaces are lacking their usual luster? Granite is a strong stone, especially when it is sealed. If your seal has begun to wear away you may notice the granite surface becoming cloudy and less vibrant. Additionally, you may notice etch marks from moving things against the surface of your counters. At Modern Stone Care we work with you to preserve the beauty of your stone. We deep clean all stone surfaces and then seal them for protection against outside influences. Contact us today for your granite sealing service in Houston. Moisture Rings When granite is not protected with sealant, its porous surface will become highly susceptible to moisture causing liquids to absorb into the granite. Overtime, this liquid can lead to damage and the destruction of your stone. Having a strong sealant is important to protect the stone from liquid penetrating below the surface. If you have noticed moisture rings forming under your glasses, this is a sign that you are overdue for a professional sealing. If you have observed any of the 3 signs it is time to reseal your granite countertops reach out to the team at Modern Stone Care. Our professionals will work with you to preserve and enhance the beauty of your stone surfaces to keep them looking great for decades to come. From bathroom and kitchen countertops to floors, our team is here to help you. Marble Countertop Cleaning and Sealing

Protecting your marble countertops and floors is critical in order to keep them looking great for decades. Listed below are 4 bad habits to avoid to keep your natural stone healthy: Using acidic cleaners to clean your floor Cleaners such as vinegar and lemon juice may be great options for your health and the environment, but they are bad options for stone floor maintenance. The acid can lift the sealer and etch the surface. Instead, opt for pH-neutral stone cleaner and follow directions carefully. We recommend using the MC24 Daily Stone Cleaner for marble floors.   Not cleaning up spills immediately Let’s face it, accidents happen. You’ll want to make sure to clean any spills up immediately. Some liquids can stain your marble floor. If this happens you’ll want to safely remove the stain using poultice. Learn more about this DIY solution here. To prevent stains, make sure you’re sealing your marble floors at least once per year. We recommend using the 314P Premium Sealer, the highest quality stain protection!   Using chairs without protective felt pads Stone may be solid and long-lasting, but its finish is still vulnerable to scrapes and scratches. Protect your stone floor from chair scrapes with protective pads. These can be found at your local hardware store.   Allowing pet urine to dry without quick cleanup. Your new puppy maybe your best friend, but he’s your stone floor’s worst enemy. The acid from cat and dog urine will cause etching and staining to your floor. Keep a non-acidic floor cleaner on hand to catch spills as soon as they happen, and don’t allow untrained dogs to have access to your floors while you’re away from home. If one gets past you and the damage is done, you should check out the Marble Refinishing Kit.   Natural Stone Cleaner For Marble Surfaces When you are looking for a safe marble surface cleaner that will not hurt your marble and leave you with a gorgeous and clean natural stone surface the team at Modern Stone Care in Houston is here for you. Excessive heat can cause a thermal shock, which may crack stone countertops. Use trivets that allow airflow under the hot item, particularly slow cookers that expose counter surfaces to heat for several hours. Never stand or sit on stone countertops. Small fissures in the stone may cause cracks if subjected to excessive weight. Grab a step stool instead. Pay attention to spills and wipe them up immediately. Most stone is sensitive to acidic foods like wine, citrus juices, vinegar, and salad dressings. Foods that contain excessive artificial and natural dyes like Kool-Aid and beets should be handled carefully. Even stone counters that are sealed can be etched by strong acids or harsh chemicals like chlorine bleach or ammonia. Avoid chopping or slicing directly on the stone counter to prevent scratches. Always use a cutting board. If your countertops have been finished with a sealant, it won’t last forever. Normal wear and tear removes the finish. How often you need to reseal depends upon the type and quality of the stone and the color of the stone. Light colored stone usually needs to be resealed every one to three years while darker colors can go three to five years. Always refer to your manufacturer’s instructions.   Safe Natural Stone Cleaner When you are looking for a stone cleaner that will not damage your stone and leave you with a beautiful and clean natural stone surface the team at Modern Stone Care in Houston can help! Removing Stains from Stone Floors

Natural stone is a beautiful material that when properly cared for can last for decades. Unfortunately, when these surfaces become stained they can take away from the beauty of your space. Working with the natural stone experts at Modern Stone Care in Houston, can help you to remove even the worst stains from your surfaces. Listed below are some of the most common types of stains and what you can do to fight against them before reaching out to our team of natural stone technicians.   Types of Stains and First Step Cleaning Actions OIL-BASED: (grease, tar, cooking oil, milk, cosmetics) An oil-based stain will darken the stone and normally must be chemically dissolved so the source of the stain can be flushed or rinsed away. Clean gently with a soft, liquid cleanser with bleach OR household detergent OR ammonia OR mineral spirits OR acetone. ORGANIC (coffee, tea, fruit, tobacco, paper, food, urine, leaves, bark, bird droppings) May cause a pinkish-brown stain and may disappear after the source of the stain has been removed. Outdoors, with the sources removed, normal sun and rain action will generally bleach out the stains. Indoors, clean with12% hydrogen peroxide (hair bleaching strength) and a few drops of ammonia. METAL (iron, rust, copper, bronze) Iron or rust stains are orange to brown in color and follow the shape of the staining object such as nails, bolts, screws, cans, flower pots, metal furniture. Copper and bronze stains appear as green or muddy-brown and result from the action of moisture on nearby or embedded bronze, copper or brass items. Metal stains must be removed with a poultice.(See section on Making & Using a Poultice) Deep-seated, rusty stains are extremely difficult to remove and the stone may be permanently stained. BIOLOGICAL (algae, mildew, lichens, moss, fungi) Clean with diluted (1/2 cup in a gallon of water) ammonia OR bleach OR hydrogen peroxide. DO NOT MIX BLEACH AND AMMONIA! THIS COMBINATION CREATES A TOXIC AND LETHAL GAS! INK (magic marker, pen, ink) Clean with bleach or hydrogen peroxide (light colored stone only!) or lacquer thinner or acetone (dark stones only!) PAINT Small amounts can be removed with lacquer thinner or scraped off carefully with a razorblade. Heavy paint coverage should be removed only with a commercial “heavy liquid” paint stripper available from hardware stores and paint centers. These strippers normally contain caustic soda or lye. Do not use acids

Tile and Grout Restoration in Humble TX

Are you a home or business owner in Humble, TX looking for an affordable tile and grout restoration company? Are your tile and grout floors in need of a major cleaning? Modern Stone Care has been providing Humble, TX and surrounding communities with the best floor cleaning and maintenance services available. Our team of natural stone and tile and grout experts are able to remove the deep, impacted, set-in dark stains that affect grout lines in homes and businesses. Grout is especially sensitive, even when it is given regular at home attention, it can still become blackened and unsightly. The reason tile and grout floors can be so much more difficult to maintain is because the grout lines are deeper than the tile, causing dirt and grime to get trapped and impacted. This impacted dirt and grime will cause staining and black lines to alter the appearance of your floors. While regular at home maintenance is important to keep your tile and grout flooring looking nice, deep cleaning is required to get the deep lines as clean as possible.   A common misconception about these deeply impacted grout lines, is that the only way to eliminate the stain is to relay your floors or paint over the blackened grout. Neither of these options are preferred because both come with a major downside. Whenever you choose to relay your tile floors and replace the grout, it is an expensive and time-consuming process. On the other side, whenever you choose to paint over blackened, dirt grout lines you are choosing to keep the grime. This can result in mold and rarely looks right. Additionally, whenever the paint starts to chip, which it will, you will have dirty spots poking through. The best option is to go with our excellent restoration services! We can leave your floors looking amazing for drastically less than the cost to replace your flooring. You do not have to live with these unsightly dark lines of neglect, or redo your flooring! Instead, contact the grout cleaning experts at Modern Stone Care. We will breathe new life into your floors, restoring them to their beautiful original state, saving you money and time!   At ModernStone Care, we understand that even when you give your tile and grout floors and services regular attention, through at home maintenance, your grout lines still may become dark and unpleasant to look at.
