What is Natural Stone?

Natural stone refers to many different products quarried from the earth. These materials have been used for several thousands of years, for building structures and adding decorative accents. These materials include Granite, Marble, Limestone, Travertine, Slate, and more. Natural stone materials should not just be chalked up to ricks, these materials are hand-selected for their durability and wide range of beautiful varieties.

Natural stone products are not all the same in composition, color, or texture, even whenever they have been sourced from the same area or slab. Due to the uniqueness of these natural stone materials, natural stone surfaces are unique and one-of-a-kind.

What are the different types of natural stone?

Granite: Granite is a hard, igneous rock that is found in various forms throughout the earth. Its durability and variety of colors make it the perfect material for many applications including kitchens, bathrooms, fireplaces, floors and walls. We have over 100 colors to choose from.

Marble: Marble is a crystallized stone formed from intense heat and pressure. Its sweeping lines, beautiful colors and high polish convey a look of elegance and prosperity like no other material. Available in many colors from around the world, Stone Surfaces specializes in fine Greek marbles.

Limestone: Limestone is a sedimentary stone composed primarily of calcium deposits. It has been used indoors and outdoors throughout the history of mankind to create some of the world’s most famous architecture.

Slate: Slate is a dense, metamorphic rock produced by the compression of various sediments such as clay and shale. Suitable for indoor or outdoor use, it is available in a smooth or cleft finish.

Travertine: Travertine is a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs. It often has a fibrous or concentric appearance and exists in white, tan, cream-colored, and even rusty varieties. It is formed by a process of rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate in a limestone cave. In the latter, it can form stalactites, stalagmites, and other speleothems. It is frequently used in Italy and elsewhere as a building material.

We leave you with clean surfaces without negatively affecting these materials. When properly cared for natural stone can last a lifetime. Unfortunately, when natural stone is not handled properly or is neglected, you can easily damage it.

One of the most common ways natural stone becomes damaged is by using improper cleaning products. Acidic or abrasive cleaners will scratch the surface of your stone, leave it looking cloudy, or cause residue to be left behind.

What Should I Avoid Using On Natural Stone?

Many home and business owners make the mistake of using natural cleaners on their stone surfaces, believing these are less abrasive or harmful.

However, when it comes to natural cleaners, lemon juice and vinegar are some of the main ingredients instead of toxic chemicals used in off-the-shelf cleaners. While you may think this is safer for your stone, these “natural ingredients” are actually just as bad if not worse for natural stone surfaces than every other cleaning product not designed specifically for stone.

Acidic cleaners cause natural stone to dull and damage. Even though you chose natural stone for its shine and beauty, cleaning with acid is taking away that shine with each usage. You should also be careful with acidic drinks on the surface of your stone because of the rings from bottles and cups dull the stone leaving behind obvious damage.

Keep your natural stone floors, counters, and more in the best condition by cleaning it with the proper items and avoiding any acidic-based cleaning products, whether they’re from the store or manmade, on your natural stone.

What Cleaning Product Is Safe For Natural Stone?

At Modern Stone Care, we make our own in-house safe cleaning product for your stone surfaces.

Modern Stone Care Stone & Tile Floor Cleaner is a neutral (ph 7) marble safe floor cleaner which is to be used for regular maintenance on any hard surface not harmed by water. It was originally made to protect calcite based stones, such as marble, limestone, & travertine, which are alkaline in nature due to the mineral content, from chemical etching. It’s no rinse, streak free properties make this cleaner ideal for any hard surface, as it does not leave a dulling film or residue. Special organic slats in its formula act as “moisturizers” thus preventing natural stone from “drying out.” It also contains optical brighteners to enhance the finish of the surface on which it is used.

Feel free to contact us with questions or concerns about removing a haze or cloudiness from the surface of your natural stone countertops.

Be cautious before deciding to work with a floor cleaning company that does not specifically work with natural stone. These companies take on many different services, they may use abrasive materials and cleaners on your stone that, while fine for other floor materials, can leave natural stone damaged and weak. Don’t settle for less than the best when it comes to the care of something as expensive and precious as your natural stone services. Instead, contact the team at Modern Stone Care to learn more about how we can help you protect your natural stone surfaces today so they will continue looking great for years to come.
